Why You’re Still Stuck: How Subconscious Blocks Sabotage Your Growth (And How to Find Them)
By Tori Quisling, RTT Clinical Hypnotherapist
If you’ve been doing everything right—the affirmations, the therapy, the meditation apps—and you’re still not getting the results you want in your career, health, relationships, or fertility, you’re not broken. You’re blocked.
Subconscious blocks are hidden belief systems that quietly control how you feel, act, and even how your body functions. They shape your behavior and your identity from behind the scenes—and they were likely installed before you even turned seven years old.
What Is a Subconscious Block?
A subconscious block is a deep-seated belief formed during childhood—usually at a time when you were confused, hurt, or emotionally overwhelmed. When the brain is still developing, it can’t make nuanced decisions. It sees things as Personal, Permanent, and Pervasive (the 3 P’s).
If your teacher embarrassed you in class, or a parent yelled at you when you were just asking a question, your young mind may have decided:
“I’m not smart.”
“I don’t make good decisions.”
“It’s not safe to be seen.”
This belief gets stored—along with a flood of emotions like shame, fear, or sadness. You don't consciously remember it, but it becomes the lens through which your adult life unfolds. You may experience:
Impostor syndrome at work
Anxiety in relationships or new environments
A fertility struggle that doctors can’t explain
Even though your adult self knows better, your inner child is still running the show.
Why Your Brain Chooses Survival Over Success
When children feel unsafe, they go into a survival response known as the 4 F’s:
Fight: “I’ll push back or get angry.”
Flight: “I’ll disappear or avoid.”
Freeze: “I’ll shut down completely.”
Fawn: “I’ll people-please to stay safe.”
For most young children, especially those in emotionally chaotic households, freeze and fawn are the only available tools. These patterns get hardwired and show up decades later as perfectionism, procrastination, chronic self-doubt, or emotional numbness.
Even the body may respond: in fertility clients, the nervous system says not safe, and reproduction shuts down. In high-performing professionals, these same patterns can cause burnout, panic attacks, or paralyzing impostor syndrome.
How to Identify Your Own Subconscious Blocks
Here’s a simple framework I use with clients:
🔹 1. Start with the Thought
What’s the recurring thought you can’t shake?
“I’m behind.” “I can’t do this.” “It’s too late.”
🔹 2. Notice the Emotion
What do you feel in your body when that thought appears?
Anxiety? Sadness? Shame?
🔹 3. Ask: What Must I Believe for This to Feel True?
“I’m not good enough.” “I don’t belong.” “I always mess things up.”
🔹 4. Observe the Outcome
What actions (or inactions) follow that belief?
You overwork. You underperform. You avoid IVF or a big opportunity. You give up.
These form a thought-emotion-behavior loop.
Change the belief, and you change the loop.
How RTT Hypnotherapy Breaks the Loop
RTT (Rapid Transformational Therapy) allows us to go directly to the source of the block—often a childhood scene that shaped everything that followed.
In session, we:
Revisit the original moment of pain or confusion
Feel it and understand it with adult insight
Rewire the belief and install new, empowering ones
Then I create a personalized hypnosis audio to reinforce the new belief every day—rapidly and gently.
This isn’t surface-level self-help. This is deep neural rewiring.
Real-World Examples
This work applies across many areas of life. For instance, a woman struggling with fertility may carry the subconscious belief, “I waited too long,” which can trigger stress and hopelessness in her body. Through RTT, we rewire that belief into a new truth: “My baby is coming in divine timing.” A professional woman experiencing anxiety might unconsciously believe, “I can’t handle this,” which creates panic in daily situations. Once transformed, that belief becomes: “I am calm and grounded, even in uncertainty.”
Similarly, someone battling impostor syndrome may hold the belief, “I’m not good enough,” despite outward success. In hypnotherapy, we replace that with, “I belong here, and my voice matters.” These are just a few examples of how changing the subconscious script can radically shift both your experience and your results.
